Secret Word Phrase for Kids for Help
If you have kids, or know kids, no matter how old, help them know a secret phrase for their safety. There are also universal codes for hands that can be taught to let it be known one is being held or trafficked or others. One is an open hand with fingers together but thumb apart, then bring thumb into the palm, and close the rest of the fingers over the thumb, making a fist (like the photo on this page). That signals that you need help, so hopefully someone will understand. Make sure to teach this early so you aren’t listened in on by the “bad guy” and render it useless. Make it something that sounds normal to others, though not to your family. Use something like “Love you to the moon and back” or “give a hug to the dog” (and you only have a cat) or a screwed-up pronunciation of a family name – just something that isn’t known to strangers but clues you in if you get a call.
If your child is in a bad relationship and is threatened if she leaves it, it could be a scary situation and she might need help. She can’t talk because her conversations are monitored – but if she can say that phrase, it will clue you in to figure a way to get her out of the mess. She could also be in danger but have no other way to communicate it. You can try to figure how to get help.
If you teach it early, then it can be used. If you feel you need to give the phrase later, it might be too late because she can’t talk without the whole conversation being heard.
Teach your children what to do in as many scenarios you can think of. Remember that a red flag is often a good signal to get out of a situation. If someone pleads for another chance, you should usually let them go. Girls have been spirited and lured away by lying, conning creeps. Then she may get kidnapped, raped, forced into marriage, pushed into a cult or another bad scenario. Teach her how to be careful when dating – and how to choose a good person. There are so many bad stories and scenarios one never thinks would happen to them.
