Is Your Friend Going to Compromise You? I have a friend on Facebook, but she went through my contacts asking them how they know me, and she made ridiculous comments on my posts. I realized this wasn’t a good friend to have on Facebook. She could compromise my FB existence.
She takes as many Facebook quizzes as she could find, manipulating the results to put her in the best light. There are problems with all of this. She had full access to my Facebook friends list and took advantage. I then put everything private from her after some friends asked why this person was contacting them. When someone becomes your friend, they have access to your friends unless you have the friend list set to private from view. The strangers on her friends list can compromise you by knowing who you are and going to your profile. Many scammers do this and try to add you to their friends list (whether by friend request or setting up a clone of your friends and rebuild her friends list to the clone). The comments she made on my posts were invasive and embarrassing to leave up. I didn’t need this person hijacking my posts and making them about her. I noticed one after another of her feed with these quizzes and photos manipulations. The permissions you give to the entity that made the quiz – they gain full access to your profile and information, even your friends list. That means all friends may now be vulnerable to these entities as well. Your information is compromised. If you click on her links to try the same quiz, sometimes it propagates the link to appear on your page, without you even knowing it happened. If you play an FB game, you give permission to that entity to allow it into your profile. She was also just collecting random friends from various FB groups and who knows where – just strangers to her. If she met someone at a store or office, she would immediately send out a friend request, even if only a moment meeting. She just wanted to bump up her numbers to feel important, but those people have access to her friend list, including me. That left me vulnerable to being contacted by them. She risks being cloned. I had to increase my privacy settings and set her up as an acquaintance instead of a friend. Then my posts and photos are privacy set to “friends except acquaintances”. Then I can just pop in to look at her page if I want. I no longer had quiz after quiz after quiz running down my feed. I could also be confident that no one in her contacts could find me through her. Your best defense is to make everything private – your friends list, your photos, your stories – and only let your friends see them, blocking random other FB entities from accessing them. So, having certain friends could leave you in a compromised position. Better to stick to people you know and have met or can truly trust. Gaining random people from Facebook groups and chat rooms might leave you vulnerable to scammers and such -and compromise your information. PR
