Money Saving Tips
Save on buying gas - it's so expensive right now. Find out how to take care of your car in order to
maximize gas mileage. Find the lowest deals on gas in your area, as well. If you belong to a Costco or Sam's
Club, check out their gas prices - sometimes their deals are untouchable. Last weekend (9-2-06) we got gas at Sam's for $2.77 -
there was nothing anywhere close to that low.

If you regularly buy soda pop, buy the store brands for a lot less, in the big bottles, not in cans. Many taste very similar
or even better than the big brands - although you might have to try them from different stores, since some
store brands may taste gross to you (there is one store that has consistently bad flavors in their store brand sodas -
but most others are just great).
When cooking, cook in quantity and then warm the leftovers up a day ro so later, or better yet, place in
the freezer and eat a week later - more variety then. I have a friend who puts all leftovers, no matter how small the
amount, in the freezer. At the end of each week, she puts the whole variety into a pot with some water, lets it
simmer, and serves "leftover soup" - her kids love it.
Make your own coffee - gourmet coffee houses may have great tasting coffee, but can add up in huge bills
each month - people have spent a hundred
dollars per month at gourmet coffee houses! All you need is coffee beans (in this case also a grinder)
or ground coffee, a coffee maker or a
special coffee drip pot with a filter (or even a small sieve you can submerse into a mug of boiling water will do in
a pinch), and then a few flavorings - like cream or milk, cinnamon, nutmeg, a chunk of chocolate to scrape, or perhaps
butterscotch or caramel ice cream flavorings. Use your imagination and come up with new flavors too! Buy a small
cappuccino maker to use for steaming and frothing your cream or milk, and for making the espresso shots.
When going out to eat, drink water - have your milk or soda at home. It will be a lot cheaper - the drink
cost in eating out can be huge - and the drinks only cost the restaurant pennies to serve you.
Use coupons - pull out coupons you'd use and put them in a file for the week or the month that you will go through -
only keep coupons that you use or you'll feel too overwhelmed to look through them - keep them in your car or look through
them before taking off on errands.
Pay attention to rebate offers and send them in promptly - most people let these rebates lapse and never get
their money back.
Eat healthy - more fresh fruits, fresh or steamed vegetables, and whole grain foods - less eating out, less
processed or instant food (less nutrition, more pure junk and fillers) - you can save yourself not only money and calories,
but also trips to the doctor for bad health or high cholesterol.
Clean with vinegar or baking soda, or use carbonated water (without the sugar in it) to fizzle up spill stains on
your carpet - not everything needs to be an expensive store or national brand. One great cleaner is sold in
concentrate by the handicapped association - buy it and dilute it for use and it will last a long time
When something you use is on sale, buy it then - try to do without until it's on sale, if you can.
Buy in bulk and then store the excess in the freezer or in air tight containers - cheese and butter freeze nicely
for quite awhile in the freezer (cheese should be defrosted slowly or in the microwave in short 5-10 second
increments - defrosted cheese is better for cooking or baking, not for snacking).
Fill up your car with gas when the price is low, and gas up more often while it's high - try to time it so you
can maximize your low gas cost.
If your grocery offers a discount on gas, make it a habit to fill up when you shop for groceries (sometimes a
larger purchase at the store will net you greater discounts).
You can get better gas mileage by: keeping your tires at correct air pressure, driving at the speed limit, keeping
your car maintained - change the oil every 3000-5000 miles, new air filter, etc. See more hints at

Relief for your back & neck when using a laptop
Laptops are ergonomically awful - the screen and keyboard aren't in the right places to keep yourself
healthy - you have to lean over to work with it, and then there is the problem of heat - which can and does
cause other health problems. One wonderful invention is the LapGenie
- it is an adjustable desk to set your
laptop into the best position it can be. It folds up for easy travel, and has many other uses. Check it out. It's made a huge difference to
me and a lot of people.
