Moving Tips
Ok, moving can be stressful - try to have a sense of humor about it - things will get hectec and things will likely go wrong.
Write down a plan or schedule to follow - it's
going to make your life easier than just trying to remember everything. Here is a list you can start with:
- If movers are doing your move - ask them to have you empty your trash cans before packing them - in one of
our moves, all the movers did was pack the trash cans with packing paper to stabilize the trash during the move - we
found out at the new place that our trash came with us!
- Box your own important things - file boxes from
Office Depot
are
great for this. Pack your own critical papers, jewelry, coin collections, photos and videos,
medicines, things close to your heart - and move them yourself as much as you can. If the movers lose these things,
they are a hard loss to make up. Be sure to label these boxes as ones the movers are NOT to pack.
- Inventory what you have - label as needed, photo or video, and list. Write down details as needed. This will help
in case movers lose your items, and it will help with knowing what is lost, and also for writing your will when you
get around to that. Now is a great time to do an inventory - if you have a burglary, you will know what was taken.
- Get rid of things you will never use - donate usable items, throw away things that are no good. Schools often take
empty ink cartridges and cell phones you'd think to throw away.
- Change your address on everything - banks, post offices, business license, dog license, car registration, driver's license,
checks, affiliate programs, magazines, etc. Usually catalogs and even magazines will pick up on your change of address fast.
- When your home is being packed, make sure to snag things you'll be needing for preparing food - pan, plates, glasses,
utensils, spatula, etc. Movers tend to put everything away and do not distinguish whether you'll need something until the last minute.
Make sure the mover labels your kitchen and/or other boxes you'd need immediately so you can open them first.
- Pack freezer and refrigerator things yourself and move them yourself - they won't likely make it in a moving truck, and
not all will take the perishable foods. Give them away or throw them away if you can't take them. If you are moving the freezer
or refrigerator, defrost and allow to dry for a day before they'd be loaded.
- Move your own pets or have a specific animal handing service move them for you. It can be traumatic for pets - they'd rather go
with you to feel calm about the move.
- Movers usually won't take your aerosols (spray cans), flammables, drain cleaners, combustibles, ammunition, liquid pesticides,
hand guns, chemicals, fuels, etc. Many liquid items won't be taken if they can spill. Throw or give these away, or take them yourself.
- Detach all stereo and computer cables and wires, and take down any fixtures that are attached to the house - movers often will
not take them down for you. Prepare appliances and other things (water bed, etc.) for the move if needed - some may require special handing.
- Drain all fuel & oil out of things you'll be moving - lawn mowers, snow blowers, etc.
- Move tour own plants if they are important to you - some don't make the move if movers take them.
- Keep your pets secured, out of the way of the movers and packing process - they can get confused and find a way out in
all the commotion.
- Order your utilities to be both turned off at the old place and turned on at the new place - phone, electricity, water, gas, DSL, etc.
