Go to American Blinds at the site and check out the "blackout" roller shades - if you live in an area with a lot of light at night, like we do, the blackout roller blinds don't let the light in - easier to sleep!

Mopping

Who likes mopping? Not so many people - but for the care of your wood floors, and to keep the floors sanitary, you do need to mop perhaps every week, or more often. Before mopping, either vacuum or sweep all the loose dirt from the floors - get dirt from under the counters and dirt from the corners at this time. When mopping or sweeping, don't bend over the mop and push - walk with the mop and let your body do the work - less stress on your back. Just stand tall and hold the mop or broom and walk or sway your entire self with it.

When mopping wood floors - mop with the grain of the wood, not across the grain. First mop all the corners (at walls and doors) against the grain, then mop over when doing the rest of the floor. Try to leave as little moisture on the wood as possible to avoid the water spot look. Use a mild solution or detergent - water with vinegar is good but you might want to use something a bit stronger to sanitize the kitchen or bathroom floors. Try to mop over the same areas for as many times as the mop doesn't come up dirty. Every so often (you'll know when your manual mop gets really dirty fast or when the dirt just gets pushed around and not picked up) - you should do the mopping with rags by hand - hard work yes, but much cleaner for awhile. If you are good with the stick mop you may not have to do this, although you will likely have to take a cleansing cloth to the lower walls and doors that the mop hit and left dirt on. If you get build-up in the cracks between the wood - you might want to get an old gentle toothbrush and work these grooves to get the dirt out.

For linoleum and tile floors - you will likely have some dirt on grooves that will need to be scrubbed harder at least sometimes. You might need to scrub with a used toothbrush or a scrubber attachment on a mop may do the job. Be careful with your back when scrubbing - either on the floor or when using a stick mop. Don't scrub using your back, and don't scrub for long. Break the task into different times or days so you cover the whole floor but don't stress your back by doing it all at once.

Mopping isn't so bad if you just try to have a mindset about it. Think of the nice looking clean floors you will have. Do it when you are stressed if working helps calm you. Do it when feeling content and peaceful if it can be therapeutic for you. Put some music on while mopping - fast for energy, slow and soothing is in a calm mood. Take pride in your mopping - it's really not that bad a thing to do, and it feels good when you get it done!

With the onset of summer, and spring rains - check your windows for condensation. If you have double-pain windows you might have a breach in the seal if you see condensation between the glass panes. You will want to replace those before winter ot have the best insulation from your windows.

If you have leaking from any windows - try to find the source of the leak to see what type of fix is needed - you might need a new window or perhaps some sealant needs to be redone. Sometimes you cannot figure out where it's coming from - call a window specialist to check it out for you.

Garden Thoughts

If you haven't planted your flower and vegetable gardens yet - do it now. It's past the frost season for most areas and you want as much time as possible for a growing season. This, of course, doesn't apply to areas of the country with little change in season.

Remember to look at your seeds - cool weather seeds need to be planted early, and can be planted again late in season if the days to harvest is low enough. Put sun-loving seeds in the sunniest areas. Put taller plants in the back where they won't shade the lower-lying plants.

When planting seeds and starter plants - make sure to rotate areas of the garden in which you plant. Don't put the same type of plant where you planted last year. The soil nutrients have been used from the previous year and even if you put new soil down, you should place same-type plants in other areas each year.

When time to harvest - get those plants picked before they go too far and aren't good. Once flowers are done blooming, snip the old blooms and buds to give the plant a chance to send its energy toward the other blooms, or in making itself ready for rest and wintering.

Relief for your back & neck when using a laptop
Laptops are ergonomically awful - the screen and keyboard aren't in the right places to keep yourself healthy - you have to lean over to work with it, and then there is the problem of heat - which can and does cause other health problems. One wonderful invention is the LapGenie - it is an adjustable desk to set your laptop into the best position it can be. It folds up for easy travel, and has many other uses. Check it out. It's made a huge difference to me and a lot of people.
