How to Untangle Your Problem Hair
Tangles - not fun to comb or brush out. People with long
hair get tangled when they sleep, or play, or even when
they wash the hair. Tangles happen easily for many people,
and it's miserable enough to make one want to cut his or
her hair. People with short hair tend to have fewer
problems with getting tangled.
How does one get those tangles worked out when they
get bad? There are ways to manage the hair - but mostly
one needs to be patient.
Some maintenance tips include: washing your hair often -
at least every two to three days. This gives less time to
work in bad tangles that just get tighter and harder to deal
with. Use a brush, rather than a comb, if your hair tangles
easily. Wear the hair in braids - this keeps it under control
and lined up, rather than flying free to tangle more. You
can choose multiple braids, or one long braid. Either way,
there are hairstyles you can work with for variety (a single
braid can be coiled up into a bun, for example).
The trick to untangling hair after washing, or after it gets
tangled, is to take time with it. When washing, leave the
conditioner in the hair, rather than rinsing out. A good
conditioner will work very well staying in the hair (some
other cheap ones or ones that keep bad ingredients on the
head should be avoided).
Once ready to comb or brush (using a brush is often more
gentle to the hair), start at the bottom of the hair, in small
strands (not a large clump), and brush gently down. Work
the tangles out from bottom to top, moving up the strand
once you've untangled the bottom. Always hold the hair
above the part you are working on - so that you aren't
pulling the hair from the roots. Starting from the top tends
to push the tangled knots downward and tighten them, or
combine with others to make the tangles bigger, and worse,
and more painful.
If you run into a particularly bad tangle mass, you will
have to cut it off - unless you want to spend time
untangling it strand by strand (you'll want to check
your sanity if this is your preference!).
