Check Your Accounts At Least Daily

If you have access to your bank accounts online, you would do well to check the balance on a day by day basis. I always do and as of today I have caught 3 major errors. The first time someone got hold of my debit card info (probably swiped it through a hand reader somewhere) and bought nearly $800 of goods online. I caught it as if happened and filed a report - it was reversed shortly after. The second time, a check I sent in for $99 took $990 out of my account. After some amount of doing and time, it was also corrected.

The third time - happened this morning. I logged into my business account and saw a very wrong balance - incredibly lower than it should be. I went to look at the activity, and it turned out a $22.11 payment I made over the phone was charged to my account as $2211.00! I called up the company that made the charge, and started them working on figuring out what to do. I called my bank and they tried to see what can be done, but the authorization had already automatically gone through, so there was nothing that could be done until it clears, leaving the responsibility on the company that made the charge. I was forwarded to a higher manager area and they've been on it all day, and still nothing resolved yet (other than admission that the mistake is theirs). So, we're hoping the paperwork request got to the merchant account people in time to undo the charge before it comes out of "pending" and clears. If it clears, I will have to wait for a refund - another several days down the road. The bank, knowing what happened, will monitor and allow the charges that are set to clear as they come through, at no penalty to me. I also had to call my cell company to ask for a several day extension for making its payment. That was no problem at all. I had to stop at a grocery store and when asked how my day was, I explained "frustrating" and told what happened. Of all things, in trying to help my day get better, the cashier gives me a $2 "coupon code" to take off my total - to help my day get a little bit better. Some things still went right - the caring of a stranger to try to do a little something - went a looong way!

The best way to get a mistake such as those above corrected quickly is to check the activity often enough to start fighting it asap. Otherwise you could continue to use your card, write checks, etc., on the account and then go into the negative - that makes it tougher to not get dinged the penalties - if you have too many charges that you keep on adding up. Talk to both your bank and the company that made the mistake - immediately when you find a problem. You might also catch a miscellaneous charge that you never even made - and find you have been scammed. Just act quickly to get it taken care of.

Scams & Alerts

Don't reply to email "from" the IRS, your bank, your credit company, or any other entity asking you to log in and verify account information. If you think something is real about it - call or email from the contact information directly on the original site or in phone book - NEVER contact the place from information on the email.

These scams are also working by way of US postal mail, the phone (have you been getting the bogus auto warranty calls, or the calls about your last chance to be eligible to lower your credit rate, etc. - all bogus!), and any other way they can get to you. Let them be, and give them NOTHING! NO account info, no passwords, no money, NOTHING.

Also - look over your bills, such as phone bill - for any charges you haven't authorized. My husband found a recurring charge on the phone bill (he hadn't even looked at it for some time) and had to do a lot of arguing to get it off the bill - it offered no service, and we hadn't even authorized it (they claim the other spouse they aren't talking to is the one who authorized it, and believe this - they tape conversations and re-edit them to sound like what they want - they ask you to say "yes" and "no" so they can splice them onto questions they splice in) - be aware of bogus charges on your bills!

Relief for your back & neck when using a laptop
Laptops are ergonomically awful - the screen and keyboard aren't in the right places to keep yourself healthy - you have to lean over to work with it, and then there is the problem of heat - which can and does cause other health problems. One wonderful invention is the LapGenie - it is an adjustable desk to set your laptop into the best position it can be. It folds up for easy travel, and has many other uses. Check it out. It's made a huge difference to me and a lot of people.

How? When is the time in Florida the same as the time in Oregon? How is this possible?
The answer is "There is a portion of Oregon, in the lower east side of the state, Malheur County, which remains on Mountain Standard Time, while the rest of the state is on Pacific Stadard Time. There is a portion of the Florida panhandle, which includes Pensacola, which runs on Central Standard Time, while the rest of Florida is on Eastern Standard Time. When the Daylight Savings ends, the hourly time when catching up from West to East will hit both of these areas as the same time, at 2 am CST - when Mst is 1am, CST kicks back an hour to 1 am."
