When ordering flowers to be delivered, make sure to order something more unique
than the standard dozen roses arrangement. At Valentine's Day - all those dozen roses bouquets are
arranged in large quantities, ready to be sent out in a moment. But - they were prepared
in assembly line fashion perhaps even 3 weeks ago - and won't be so fresh or last long
once it's received. Order an arrangement that is a bit more personalized, and know
that someone had to pull out the fresh flowers to put it together.
When you receive your flowers, some buds may still be closed, waiting to bloom in a day or two. This will
keep the bouquet looking fresh, plus it's safer for those blooms to be closed in transport. Always cut your
flower stems off at an angle, taking off about one inch from the bottom. This will allow the water to
get back into the stem, where it may be closed up or partially closed up from exposure to air. Cut the flower stems again
in about 3 days, adding fresh water, and another packet of flower solution.
Place water into a vase and add the flower care solution that comes with the delivered flowers. If you
don't get such a solution, you can put a bit of sugar into the water. Remove any leaves that might get into the water area.
Place the flowers into the water. Some flowers need water badly, being
somewhat dehydrated after travel (think of how you feel on an airplane or even a car trip - you get thirsty, too).
Keep care of the flowers and leaves - remove dead or dying buds and stems, and remove dried or dead leaves, and
anything that generally looks bad.
Choose a florist that gets the flowers straight from the fields - they will last longer. When there are too many
"middle-men" between the fields and you, the flowers will age considerably and not last long once you receive
them.
