Your Credit & Repair Options

Is your financial situation bad? Do you need to repair or restore your credit? Are you in trouble? Are you looking to consolidate your debt? There are good options in debt consolidation, because a service can usually talk your total debt amount down, and perhaps lower your interest rate, due to higher blocks of people needing the service. Research your options. A negative credit report might be a requirement to getting a solution (and not all agencies will disclose this - once they close your account, a negative report goes out), and perhaps is not what you want. Are you thinking of bankruptcy? You can and should get a copy of this report, as well. Resources for :

Repair & Restoration

Once your credit is ruined, you may need to restore it into good standing. You may have bad report items that need to be taken off, and perhaps that will take care of it - always get a copy of your credit report so that you can verify what information is on it. You might need to re-establish credit with a new card - find a company that will give you a card even though your credit is bad right now. Make sure to pay it back - do not get any card if you cannot make the payments - that does no good. Don't request a credit report often, however - it will count against you in your credit rating. Realize that when you apply for a loan or credit card, they will also request your credit report - and those will also count into lowering your credit score.

Can you repair your credit yourself? Yes - you can, but it might be a lot of work on your part. If you use an agency, make sure you check them out. They can remove wrong items on your credit report, but you can often do the same thing yourself. They can't get rid of anything that is legitimately on your report - so don't talk to them if they promise this.

Your best bet may be to negotiate directly with the card companies you owe money to, and set things up to make monthly payments that you can handle, or try to make a settlement that can pay off your debt - perhaps at a discount. If you do this, find out the tax issues to work out - the difference may be taxable as income.

It might be better to make monthly payments to pay off the debt, rather than going after a settlement - but ask for a low percentage rate or zero rate. Some will work well with you, and will even let you finagle the date of payment if you run into trouble. Let them see you are really trying to work with them. Often when you agree to pay down a debt at a low interest rate, you will have to close the account down - this might make its way into a credit rating report. Closing the account may get you a lower or even zero percentage rate, which may be worthwhile, but you may have to live with a "ding" on your credit report. Figure all this out - if you can keep the account open while you pay it off, it might be the best thing.

How will you know if someone applies for a new cell phone, credit or bank account in your name? IDENTITY GUARD® can alert you quickly. Identity fraud can be costly and frustrating. Protect yourself now.

First try to negotiate the payments you "can" make monthly and see if the credit company will work with you on it. They usually appreciate clients who try to work things out more than those who try to hide from them. Sometimes they can be difficult, though. Once they turn it over to a credit agency - you lose more control and it's harder to negotiate - many are so difficult to work with and begin to threaten you. Talk to the credit card company first - before they sell off your credit line to someone else who will not work as easily with you. Make sure to make the payments as promised - or call to say you need a delay on one of them until your paycheck cashes - they might work with you if you are up front with them. If you let a payment lapse, you are less likely to get things worked out to your advantage, or you might get a lien, or a lawsuit, or something served to you. Always talk to your creditors and try to work with them.

Consolidate Your Debt

Consolidation services may help you negotiate one monthly payment to pay all your credit cards back, chipping away at the total debt. It's unlikely you can do this yourself. This is because the consolidation service works with many people who have payments to the card companies and this gives the service a collective large amount of debt that can be negotiated down with each card company. You can then receive a discount on your payment. Make sure you understand the drawbacks - you might have to live with a bad credit report for 7 years, for example. Taking out a home loan might be a better choice to make - no one has to know that the extra money you get from the loan will pay off a debt.

Consider refinancing your home if you own one, and use the extra cash to pay off debt.

Consolidate Debt & Save.

Reports

You should check your credit reports every so often - to see if any reports are inaccurate or should not have been reported. Some card companies have been known to make a bad credit report to the reporting agencies, even though you are making at least your minimum payments. There are many instances of this. Some reports have erroneously been made toward the wrong person, as well. You should make sure all entries on your report are legitimate to your account. Don't check it often or force it to be checked by applying for credit cards and such - it will drag down your credit rating score.

Bankruptcy

Sometimes you have no choice other than to give in and file for bankruptcy - be very certain to investigate this option thoroughly before filing for bankruptcy. Find out what assets you can keep, and which assets you must give up. Then decide if you can live with it.

Identity Theft

Identity theft is one of the largest growing crimes in the United States and can happen to anyone. Thieves take any identifying information and get driver's licenses, credit cards, etc. in your name. They get the information from credit cards, receipts, social security numbers, driver's licenses, information hacked from your computer or stored elsewhere on the Internet, and more. People have had their possessions taken over, their credit records ruined, credit cards run up to the limit, driver license records ruined, and more problems due to identity theft. The thieves make new documents using your identity - new driver's licenses, new or reissued credit cards, and such. Protect your name - fight identity theft. For more information Click Here.
