Heartburn at Night 05-30-08
If you are prone to heartburn at night, you may have a more serious condition - ask your
doctor. If it happens less frequently, you can make a difference. Eat spicy and
hard-on-your-stomach foods earlier in the evening, several hours prior to bedtime. If
this doesn't work, avoid those foods beyond the afternoon. Of course - you may take an
indigestion type of tablet to help - Rolaids or Tums - but don't use regularly - talk to
your doctor about it. Try drinking milk to neutralize the foods.
Prop up your head on pillows
or place something under your mattress at the head of the bed - so your head will be
higher than your stomach. Let the saliva drip downward and not the stomach juices flow upward.
Be aware of those "adjustable beds" - some are outright scams. If you want an adjustable
bed - shop around and get unbiased opinions - don't trust a salesman. Recently in the news
were reported problems with Craftmatic and Contour beds - beware! You can lift up your
head on your bed yourself by placing phone books or something between the top mattress
and the bottom mattress (or bedframe).

Soothe Your Aching Stomache 03-30-08
If you aren't feeling well - upset or queasy stomach, try sucking on some peppermint
candy - we keep several candy canes beyond Christmas just for later. It can help
soothe the stomach. Maybe keep a box or tub of "Sweet Stripes" in the house.
Sometimes drinking milk will help - coat the stomach from bad stuff, or help when
one has eaten too many sweets.
Ginger ale can help - but stir it gently to break down the fizz. Same with
7-Up or Sprite - if the carbonation is stirred out, and it is sipped slowly,
it may help the stomach feel better. It has to be a clear soda, not highly
sugared or highly acidic, and not caffeinated.
Sometimes the stomach hurts from constipation - for this, eat raisins and prunes, or
drink prune juice - have an open mind - it's really not so bad for most people. You
might have to get suppositories from the store if you've waited a long time with
no results. When feeling constipated, stay away from sugars, bananas, cooked carrots,
and such. Eat more fiber.
If throwing up, make sure to have the person drink lots of fluids - so not to
allow dehydration. If throwing up goes beyond 24 hours, or has blood in it, see a doctor.
Most stomach problems will get better with rest and time. If not, or if the
pain is quite acute, call your doctor.
Eat Cranberries 11-23-07
Eat more cranberries - they are good for you. Cook with cranberries - make muffins, relish, breads, pies, sauces, juices -
use them wherever you can. They are a good source of vitamin C, and of anti-inflammatory flavinoids (anthocyanins) - these also
contain antioxidants. Theyare rich in procyanidins - these may help keep bacteria from attaching to your urinary tract - drink and eat lots of
cranberries and cranberry juice when having a yeast infection. Cranberries may have health benefits in preventing urinary
tract infections. There may be even more benefits that are being found. Make cranberries a part of your diet all year 'round.
Going to the Doctor? 10-23-07
Before going to the doctor - gather up pertinent information to take with you, because chances are you will be asked to fill in a
form asking for that info. These include date of last physical, last dental appointment, last mammogram, last
hospitalization (or all operations and procedures). Also list out all your medications you take - whether daily or
as needed - take the name of the drug and the strength (mg. etc.) plus the dosage (how much, how often). Take your
insurance card and co-payment amount.
Make sure to take notes as to what has been going on with you lately - type of pain (describe it), discharges,
infections, mucus color, recent cough, rash, etc.
Make sure to allow plenty of time for the appointment - you may be stuck in the waiting room for quite some
time - take something you need or have been meaning to do - your laptop and work, your special magazine or book or
coupons to arrange, knitting or hand sewing, etc. Make sure your child, if you bring her along, has plenty to
occupy herself with (not all offices have enough toys or videos to please your child).
Try to be patient in the waiting room - stay calm. It is stressful for everyone, and when you see someone go into an appointment
who arrived after you - consider that this person may have had the appointment time before you, or is seeing a different doctor,
or a nurse or other practitioner. Or perhaps has an emergency issue, or some very quick and small matter that can be
squeezed in. Some people come in just to give a urine sample or get a shot (and some are medication, etc. vendors who need to
check in with their orders). Don't feel like you are being ignored,
but after every 20-30 minutes, do go to the front desk to get a time updae and remind them you are there (once in
awhile they can get overwhelmed and forget about you).
If you feel you will need more than 10-15 minutes with your doctor, schedule the appropriate amount of time for
the appointment when you make the appointment - once you are on their schedule, it will be hard for you to get the extra
time when you show up.
Lipstick Lead 10-17-07
Check your lipstick - many have lead in them. Lead from lipstick can be ingested, being on the lips.
Lead poisoning is a big concern - there are toy recalls, and products have been forced to take lead out
of their structure. Don't use a lipstick which has lead. one third of the lipsticks were found to have a
level which exceeded the FDA's levels for candy. Lead builds up in the body and accumulates over time. Lead poisoning
can cause many problems - among these: constipation, irritability, aggressiveness, sleepiness, anemia, vomiting, seizures, coma,
and death. Not all symptoms can be reversed, and long-term health problems can develop. Be safe with all your lead
exposure risks - and get rid of the lipsticks that have lead.
Ask Your Doctor about Aspirin 10-12-07
For fever and pain relief, you should know your options. Ask your doctor before thinking of taking aspirin. It is
recommended to have some aspirin around in case of heart attack - taking aspirin at the onset of a heart attack
has helped many people. However, there are certain conditions which can be aggravated by aspirin. For instance,
my allergist warned me about taking aspirin - I have nasal polyps and apparently in my case aspirin could be quite
harmful - I may have an allergy to it or could develop an allergy to aspirin, and it wouldn't be known until it's
too late. Not everyone should take aspirin, and certainly NO child should EVER take aspirin -
it is suspected in masking Reyes Syndrome symptoms, and perhaps aggravating the condition. To be safe, try other alternatives
to aspirin - Acetaminophen (as in Tylenol), Ibuprofen and Naproxen Sodium. These also can have harmful effects, especially
when taken for long periods of time, or in high dosages. So talk to your doctor to figure out your best option for pain
relief and fever control.
Surgical Fires 09-19-07
Before having surgery, discuss with the medical staff all their safeguards in the operating room. It seems that
there have been a lot of instances of spontaneous combustion in the operating room - and burning the person having the operation.
It could happen on the face (potentially most serious) or even lower on the body, under the blanket. For the fire, there needs to
be fuel, heat or fire (spark), and oxygen - all of which are present in the operating room. The patient under anesthesia
is unable to communicate discomfort and cannot tell the staff that there is burning.
According to a non-profit health agency, ECRI,
"Virtually all operating room fires ignite on or in the patient. These fires typically result in little
damage to equipment, cause considerable injury to patients, and are a complete surprise to the staff."

Don't Use Old Pancake Mix 09-18-07
Not that I ever do - but my husband makes pancakes from a mix - which I won't eat. I make pancakes from
scratch and use whole grains in them. He just wants a quick and easy way to make them. Thing is, when the
pancake mix gets old (and who knows just how old), it begins to grow a mold, invisible to the human eye or senses.
It doesn't cook off when grilling, and can be fatal if someone eats it. If you do buy quick-to-make pancake mixes,
store them in a different air-tight container, and in the freezer. Do not keep it around for months - try to use it within a
month or two (if stored properly) and then thrown it out. Saving the mix isn't worth it - if it's getting close to
time to get rid of it, and you don't want to waste it, make pancakes from the remainder and freeze them to be eaten later.
Just don't keep the mix for very long.

Is Bottled Water Good for You? 09-04-07
Do you drink a lot of bottled water? You might not be getting all your needs met. Bottled water doesn't have
the fluoride that is in fresh tap water. In fact, many of the brands you buy are not even filtered through from being
basically straight tap water (and most of the bottled water sold is basically from the
same 2-4 main companies). Let yours sit for a week - is it dropping particles? Is it getting cloudy? Bottled water
should not be kept for long periods of time without getting used. Try to keep them cool, not heated. No water
is meant to be kept indefinitely - it goes bad over time, and when heated.
The bottles should not be re-used for other drinks - these are meant to be disposable and so the plastic breaks
down eventually. You don't want to be drinking out of that container when this happens. Dispose of the bottles
responsibly - recycle them. On another note, don't store drinking water in plastic milk cartons - you'll be drinking
bad water from the plastic breaking down.
There is a rise in people getting cavities when drinking lots of bottled water - this tends to say that there isn't
enough fluoride getting into people's systems. Switch to tap water, or filter the tap water as you drink it (to
remove other particles and chemicals) - and save all that money you are throwing away when buying bottled water. It's ok
to keep it around to grab when needing to drink on the run, but don't depend on it for all your drinking needs. Use a
water bottle filled with tap water (unless, of course, your tap supply is bad). If you don't drink the tap water, get a
fluoride rinse to rinse with every night after brushing your teeth.
This reminds me of something someone once told me: "Do you realize that Evian is "naive" backwards?"
Do You Snore? 08-31-07
Snoring can keep you family awake, and keep you very tired all day long. You might not be getting enough oxygen (sleep
apnea - where your breathing is interrupted by your sleep habits), or you might be waking yourself up off and on all night, or be
getting kicked by your partner for your snoring, etc. You may need an operation - perhaps laser therapy, to get rid of extra
growth in your throat area, the uvula or tonsils, perhaps. You might not be so badly off - perhaps a quick spray of a snoring solution will work,
or a Breathe-Right strip. Try different approaches to your snoring, but if they don't work, see your doctor - it could be
more serious than any quick fix can take care of, and in the case of sleep apnea, it can be dangerous if not addressed.
Eat to Prevent Colon Cancer 08-16-07
While colon cancer has a very high survival rate - for those in early stages who start treatment before the cancer advances -
there are foods you should avoid in order to help prevent getting colon cancer, or to keep from recurring cancer after
you are cured. Stay away from fatty foods and red meats. These are not good for the colon cancer - no one should be
eating much of these, in any case, but especially those prone to colon cancer. Also - get plenty of exercise and eat a healthy
diet of good foods. Vegetables, fruits, high fiber foods, whole grains, turmeric - these are what should be eaten - these may help
break down and rid the colon of carcinogens that build up from a fat-rich diet.
Fat rich foods include red meat, eggs, dairy products, salad dressings, certain oils used in cooking. Try to use more
olive and canola oil if you need an oil based food or sauce. You should also strive to get within a healthy weight
range for your body type. Stage 3A or less patients are more likely to be able to be cured, advanced stages 3B and up are
less encouraging. Get a colonoscopy done when you are about 50 years old, and follow the regular scheduling after that.
Eat Fresh 08-08-07
Sorry for the lull - we were gone for several weeks in Scandinavia. We could all use to learn from the foods
there - we primarily stayed in Finland, and I remember all the wonderful foods we ate when I was there as a child.
They serve sandwiches at any meal - open face on thin grain bread, lean and thin meats, cheese, tomato and cucumber slices. No
mayonnaise or other condiments. Also served are lots of berries - fresh, jellied, newly picked from the forests. Fish is a staple
and so are boiled new potatoes with dill. No need for all the extra flavorings and fat. There were fresh peas, beans, and many
more fruits and vegetables - just hit any "tori" or outdoor market and there are booths of fresh foods to pick from. YUM! Very
little in the way of sodas are served with regularity, but I do have a "thing" for pear soda. The milk flavor was also
outstanding - better than anything we have here. Now that we're back, I have no interest in
the heavy fatty foods and condiments, or even a soda. The full flavors of the fresh foods
are amazing. I am so thrilled that we planted our garden before leaving - just go pick fresh foods and prepare right
away - so much better than store-bought! Eat fresh as much as you can - steam rather than boil, avoid butter and other
fatty calorific flavors. Learn to unlock your tongue to appreciate light delicate flavors. It's healthier for you!

Got Bad Breath? 06-30-07
Do you regularly have a problem with your breath? Is it foul most or all the time? Do you have
other problems which may contribute, such as teeth that are rotting or digestive problems?
You should probably go to a dentist or doctor - there may be problems that you are not aware
of, especially if you have a high threshold of pain and don't notice much. It could be serious, or
it could be easily fixed. Bad breath can be an indicator of your needing to take some sort of
action, and for your health, please do. Teeth problems can lead to more serious problems with your health -
your heart, or other functions can be affected.
Find out more about bad breath here.
Leave the Beds Unmade for Awhile 06-21-07
Did you know it's a good idea NOT to make your bed first thing in the morning? The bed is still damp and warm from
your sleeping in it, and becomes a great environment for bugs, mites, lice, etc. Throw back the covers and
let the sheets get dry and cool off, then make the bed a few hours later. What's the hurry?
Warm Up & Cool Down to Prevent Injury 06-07-07
People constantly pull or tear muscles and tendons and ligaments - most can be avoided by doing warm-up and cool-down
stretches and exercises, prior to and after an activity. Every day you should start out with stretches when you get up -
sometimes your muscles are so tight that even an early morning sneeze can pull a muscle. Before you start any
activity, even doing laundry or gardening, stretch your muscles. Cold, tight muscles are more prone to injury. If you are
more active, and jog or ride a bike, etc., stretch before doing that.
Once you are done with your activity, do some cool down stretches or exercises - more slowly than your activity (unless it's a
passive activity). If you go straight from an activity without cooling down, your muscles will still be wound up and
you can injure them by doing any fast movement or stretching too far, among other ways. You need to make sure to cool down
to prevent further injury.
Make sure to impose these on your children, as well - the sooner good habits are built in, the healthier all will
be.
Don't Share Makeup 05-28-07
Don't ever share makeup or let anyone put makeup on your child. Sharing makeup also shares germs which can cause
health problems. Mascara tends to be the worst (even if it's your own). Flakes fall onto the eyeballs and can cause
infection, or even blindness. Your eyes are very sensitive to germs and foreign objects. Eye shadow can also flake
off and fall into the eyes.
Use good, quality makeup - not the cheapest choices that contain only bad ingredients. Look for products without any
toxins or useless or harming ingredients. Stay away
from alcohol, camphor, citrus oils, propylene glycol, SLS, talc, and other harsh or pungent ingredients.
See a safe line of cosmetics here.
Do You Have Ring Rash? 05-08-07
If you have been wearing your ring for awhile (or avoiding wearing it because it's not comfortable),
and you notice a rash that either itches or hurts, you may be allergic to the ring. If it's a cheap
ring - costume jewelry - you might be sensitive to the material it is made of, or the or paint or finish on it.
If it's a yellow gold ring,
you might be allergic to the nickel in the gold. Often gold is mixed with nickel as an alloy - but many people are
allergic to it (I am). If you find this to be the case, take the ring off and see if it improves. If so, you might
need to switch to a different type of ring without nickel in it - perhaps platinum or other type.
Find Platinum Jewelry Here.
Help for Your Back 03-12-07
I've had a bad back for many years - but I have learned to handle the pains and weaknesses by being careful.
Every day I need to do some stretches - it will help with stiffness and help keep my back strong. There are
several simple exercises that we'll post later. Make sure to stretch before doing something that might strain the
back.
When standing over the sink or stove, place one leg up on a low stool or in a cabinet for comfort. When driving,
try to keep both legs up in somewhat the same placement and position - when accelerating for a long drive, keep the
left leg stretched out as well. Or use the automatic control to keep your speed constant if you are not in constantly
changing speed areas. In a car, keep a lumbar support properly in place or a pillow at the small of your back (for
emergencies I use a roll of paper towel). Place some sort of v'd support (put wider edge of a triangle
at the back of the seat, letting the rest of the "v" slope down to thinner part at forward edge of seat)
in the crease of the back of the seat - it
drops down too dramatically and stresses your back. Try to keep the seat flat and level.
Keep good posture and walk. Try to keep your weight down or you'll cause more stress on your back by holding the
weight.
Use good ergonomic principles and products to keep your posture correct, and alleviate stress on your body. A
knee chair may be more comfortable.
Sometimes if your hip and leg are in pain, it might be a pinched nerve - you might be able to help by doing
stretches that pull the compression from the back out. I did this recently and although it took 2 weeks to get better,
it did get better and no doctor trip needed. Of course, I was well in tune with knowing that the nerve was pinched. You
might check with a doctor - it could be something else.
Don't wear high heeled shoes - wear flatter shoes so not to strain your back or leg muscles. I like extra
cushioning at my heels to take the impact off from my back - I wear
Nike
Airs and they help my back
tremendously - no, I can't wear them all the time, but I do as much as able.
When using your laptop, try adjusting its position with the
LapGenie - I can't work without it.
There are many more things you can do to help your back - we'll post more in time.
Find out more about back pain.

Heart-Healthy Eating 03-20-07
Not only should you eat more vegetables, fruits, whole grains, fat-free dairy products, lean meat (make sure to eat fish)
and such for good health all the way around, but you should eat more of certain foods that can help your heart.
Whole grains along with fruits and vegetables also help maintain blood pressure that is in the good and normal range.
These heart-healthy foods include fiber-rich foods (oatmeal, bran) - people in general do not eat enough fiber. Eat more
fiber to maintain a normal weight - fiber fills you up. Start the day out with a good breakfast loaded with fiber.
Whole grains are packed with lots of good nutrition - namely vitamins, calcium, soluble & insoluble fibers. It's easy
to add grains to most foods - add bran flakes to yogurt or salads, for example. When baking, substitute at least 1/3 to 1/2
of the flour amount with whole wheat or whole grain flour. Toss in some un-ground grains for extra texture. Add whole grains to
your meatloaf and meatball recipes - try adding it to more recipes. Choose or make whole grain
breads, cereals, waffles, bagels, muffins, English muffins, tortillas - look at the ingredient lists - pick the whole
wheat or whole grain varieties that list the grain ingredient first (wheat flour and unbleached wheat flour are
white flour and not of grains).
Plan your menus to include a diet rich in onions, garlic, tomatoes, spinach, olives, beans, nuts, broccoli,
grapefruit and other citrus fruits, carrots. Use cayenne pepper to spice your foods, as well as cinnamon and turmeric.
Avoid saturated fats and trans-fats. Use olive oil and canola oil.
Keep healthy snacks around - slices of carrots and celery, grapes, nuts, grain foods.
Drink lots of water - it will help flush out impurities and helps your skin, as well. Drinking lots of fluids
(low or no calorie) will help fill you up so you will eat less.
Exercise regularly and work yourself aerobically to get your heart rate up.

Good Statistics 02-23-07
Body fat - if you have too much, you are increasing your risk for heart disease, high blood pressure,
diabetes and perhaps even a type of cancer.
Target Body Fat for Women - 20-22%
Target Body Fat for Men - 14-16%
Target Blood Pressure for an Adult - 120/80 (140/90 is high)
Target Blood Pressure for a Child - lower than an adult - not over 115/75 for a 9 or 10 year old -
varies with age - ask your doctor for specifics for your child.
Acne? 02-20-07
If you suffer from acne, you might want to take certain steps to try to prevent it.
Stress has a nasty way of keeping acne around, so try to calm down - exercise, eat healthy, and be happy.
Wash your face only a couple times a day, and use no soap - use a gentle cleanser that has no harsh soaps or
perfumes or ingredients. Take off all makeup at night and go to sleep with a clean face, on a clean pillowcase.
Pull your hair back so it doesn't contact your face with the hairspray and other things you use in your hair. Drink
lots of water - it will help keep your skin healthy. If you know you are affected by certain foods, avoid them - no
matter how many people say it isn't so, my face consistently breaks out when I eat American chocolate (the fine
European chocolates don't affect me). Of course, the teen years are the most difficult - no matter what you
try to do to keep acne under control, it seems to hit teens badly at some point. Make sure the teen washed his or her
face at night and use an acne topical product as needed. Don't try to pop the pimples unless they are very close to
the surface - you risk getting a big red swollen area and rarely get all the stuff out - just push it back under. The
scabs and scars take longer to heal.
Try "Extra Gentle" cleanser for your face. It's the
best facial cleanser I have ever used. The acne cream is quite effective for us, as well.
New Bifocals? 02-10-07
I just got new glasses - bifocals for the first time. Besides the fact that the styles these days don't include
large lenses (quite small from what used to be available), it does take time to get used to the effect. For awhile,
try wearing them early in the day, before putting on any of your old glasses - switching glasses at the beginning isn't a
good idea. Your eyes will likely tire out after awhile, so then take the bifocals off and put on your old glasses. Wean off
the old glasses after taking time to adjust to the bifocals.
Go for several days with starting out with the bifocals and wear for as long as you can. If you get a headache or
can't see straight, take them off. If this lasts more than a week to two, call your eye doctor. At first you'll have to
be careful going down stairs, and backing your car - things won't seem in the same perspective as you're used to - for
awhile. The area that the prescription changes may seem very wavy - just look above or below the part that isn't
focusing right. Eventually you'll get used to it and your mind will know how to adjust to it. It takes practice.
If you really aren't doing well with them after a fair period, talk to the eye doctor or the place that made the
glasses - perhaps the lenses need to be re-ground in areas, or perhaps the particular brand of lenses isn't one that
you can handle - various companies that make lenses may or may not work for you.
High Blood Pressure 02-02-07
Check your blood pressure occasionally - high blood pressure can lead to heart failure. You may be more stressed out, or
nervous, or jittery, and such. If you can feel your blood thumping in you, get to a doctor.
Risk factors that should
alert you include: smoking, obesity, diabetes, high cholesterol, aging, genetic factors, coronary artery disease, etc.
You can help slow down or prevent problems by quitting smoking, losing or maintaining a good weight, exercising, eating
healthy with lots of fiber and fresh produce, managing your stress or depression,
and reducing consumption of salt, alcohol, trans-fats, sugars, processed foods, etc.
What Happened to Breakfast? Eat a GOOD Breakfast 01-29-07
Breakfast - the new easy foods are largely bad for you. Don't even start (or continue if it's too late) eating or
serving chocolate chip chocolate muffins, chocolate chip waffles or pancakes, sugar coated cereals, white flour
treats, and the like - for any type of meal! These are common for breakfast, but SOOOO bad for us! Leave them for a dessert - ONLY.
I cannot fathom eating or serving chocolate or marshmallows or candy or
cookies for breakfast! Eat whole grains and fruit for breakfast - no sweets! Don't allow your kids to eat that kind of junk
in the morning! It's only empty calories, weighting down on the stomach and teeth, giving a quick sugar-high, then you'll see a
fast low later. Bad eating habits often begin here.
My daughter has had a certain friend stay over - and she refuses to
eat anything in our home for breakfast - she will only eat cocoa cereal, or a chocolate chip muffin. Well,
we don't serve such stuff, not even for a one time visitor - it's against my policy to even allow it (what
do you think she eats the rest of the day? Her mom won't make her eat vegetables or meats if she doesn't want them, and
she loads up on lots of sweets all day long).
Oh yeah -
same goes for serving French fries and sodas at breakfast! Stick to drinks like milk and fruit juice at breakfast time (coffee
for us older folk - not for the kids).

Eat healthy - cut out fats, sugars, white flour, fast foods, sodas, trans-fats, preservatives and
other useless foods. Try to eat more organic, less produce with pesticides. Stay away from hormone-injected
foods. Try to get more
nutrition and foods that have healthy qualities into your diet. Certain foods have healthy qualities, some have
anti-oxidants and fight sickness or can break down bad cholesterol (LDL) in the bloodstream. Some foods metabolize other
foods and some can fight cancer. Below is a list of foods to
try to increase into your diet. Eat more good foods and perhaps you'll be too full to grab those sweets and other
junk:
blueberries, cranberries, other berries
raw, unrefined nuts
spinach and other deep green leaves
onions and garlic
olives and olive oil, canola oil
beans and legumes
whole grain breads and cereals, oatmeal, bran flakes
tomatoes, broccoli, yams, artichokes, beets, carrots, squash, and other deep colored vegetables & fruits
cayenne, cinnamon, turmeric, cilantro
Citrus fruits - grapefruit, oranges, tangerines
Keep Toothbrushes, etc., in Containment 01-12-07
You might not realize that your bathroom may be full of germs - when the toilet is flushed,
there is a spray of fine mist that comes up - and even though the lid is down, the mist forces its way
out from the open areas of the seat. This mist can then land on your toothbrushes, on your towels,
in your drinking cups, etc. Considering what can mist out of the toilet, it is advisable that you
keep your cups and toothbrushes (and other personal items that might go in your mouth) in a closed off
area - in a closed drawer, in a closed medicine cabinet, or if your toilet is in its own room - close the door
when you flush so the mist doesn't go into the sink areas. Remember that when feces come in contact with
food, by restaurant workers, people get sick. It can also happen in this way - simply from the germs coming
onto your cups or toothbrushes via the mist. Be more aware and careful.

Stress Can Cause More Symptoms Than You Know 01-08-07
Sometimes when things seem wrong with your health, it may actually be a symptom of stress, and the
problem can't be fixed unless the stress is taken care of. Stress can show up as forgetfulness, or stomach aches,
or inability to think straight. There are more severe symptoms, as well. See if you can learn to relax, have fun,
laugh more - maybe you can cure your own symptoms more easily.
More ways to relax here.
Watch the Treats 12-05-06
OK - it's the holidays - you'll eat more than you should. Rich and sweet, fatty foods are everywhere. You need to
try to try to avoid the bulk of them - allow yourself an occasional treat but don't keep eating it at every turn.
You'll gain weight, probably increase your cholesterol level, probably be less active - don't give up on
exercise this season - walk more, bike if you can, work out when able. Eat smaller portions, especially of the
rich foods. Eat a bit of chocolate here and there - not one after another. Keep yourself in synch with healthy
choices - keep more slices carrots and celery around to snack on. Keep the temptation to eat all those sweets in the back of your
mind. Drink lots of water and fill yourself up so you are too full for eating. Try to keep everything in balance during the
holidays - it's hard, but you'll go into the new year with less regrets, and less pounds to lose.
Lift Carefully 11-27-06
Be sure to save your back from stress and strain by lifting very carefully. Bend down with your knees, and
pick up your load supported in front of you by your arms. Use your legs to lift it up, not bending your back.
It's important to keep weight off your back - you can strain it by pulling a muscle or causing a back spasm - which
can take you out of commission for quite awhile. Take breaks from carrying. There are exercises you should do to
stretch and strengthen your back before and after you work. Don't get carried away - rest when it hurts. Be careful
when vacuuming, mopping, even loading the dishwasher - there are so many ways you can harm your back. Take care of it.
Inhaling & Ingesting Toxins 11-17-06
If you are having chronic problems, or feeling more sick than you used to, you might be eating, drinking, or
breathing toxins. The water could be a problem. Perhaps you are using personal hygiene or beauty products that you are
very allergic or sensitive to. Perhaps someone recommended a "treatment" that can be more damaging than good, due to
bad information, as in colloidal silver ingestion. Perhaps your food is contaminated (you might eat prepared
foods that are too old - old pancake mix is dangerous because mold can grow in it and can be deadly, for example).
Perhaps there is mold or mouse droppings in your home that you are breathing the dust from. Perhaps your home
is contaminated with radon - test for it. It's hard to pinpoint the exact cause and problem, but you might become
deathly ill if you are not treated. Try pulling away from your environment - go to a motel and eat fresh foods for
awhile, perhaps a couple weeks - do you feel better? Go see your doctor for any type of clue or diagnosis, but
the cause may be too tough to figure out. You might just have to remove yourself from the product or situation.

Back Pain & Heat When Using a Laptop? 11-10-06
I have a weak back and get pain often. When using a laptop, it's been uncomfortable - both because of the
heat, and because of the way I had to bend down to see the screen. I began using a LapGenie that adjusts the
position of the laptop screen so it's closer to my eye level, and the keyboard is at the correct position
for my wrists. It's easy to adjust, and I can use it nearly anywhere - as a passenger in a car, in an airplane, in the
waiting areas of offices, in the bleachers at the ice rink, and pretty much wherever I want to work on my laptop. You
should look into it if you are tired of the heat, or if you have to bend down (to prevent back or neck pain).
You can find out more at LapGenie.
Washing With Water 11-04-06
When washing your face, which is more sensitive than the rest of your body, avoid using alcohol, perfumed
products, soaps or detergent-type cleaners. Use a gentle cleanser, and if you haven't got a gentle cleanser, then
using plain water is better than putting something bad on your face. Also, drinks lots of water since water
cleanses the skin, and can make your skin softer and healthier.
Try "Extra Gentle" for your face.
Get Enough Sleep 10-31-06
Many people get less sleep than they need. This can cause day-long fatigue, irritability, problems with
thinking straight, and more. If you fall asleep immediately when your head hits the pillow, you
probably aren't sleeping enough. Try going to bed earlier (sleeping in may be tough for some because
of the internal clock that wakes you up at a certain time regularly). You might take an afternoon nap to
refresh yourself - but don't nap for long or you may have problems getting to sleep at night.
You may be a snorer, and have interrupted sleep. Try to handle that, or go see a doctor.
Perhaps you have trouble falling asleep - you need to remove stress and nagging thoughts from your mind. And
cut off the caffeine from afternoon on. Don't have sugars or chocolate near bedtime, and don't fall asleep watching
the TV.
Check with yor doctor first - you may want to try taking Melatonin before bedtime - it helps
get you sleepy earlier than your system perhaps would like.
Sublingual
works best.
Liquid Melatonin
can let you
adjust to the right amount - start with 1/2 oz., and see how you feel - might need more (still not sleeping well) or might
need less (if had nightmares, or got agitated) - sneak up
on the amount, adding a little more until you find the level that gives you a sound sleep.

Why "Sippy Cups" May Cause Problems 10-17-06
Parents tend to make their little ones drink from "sippy cups" so they won't spill the drink.
There is the tendency to keep it filled up with juice or other sweetened drink (even milk has sugars
in it). The child is constantly sucking on this cup, and keeping the teeth constantly exposed to
the sugars - which can weaken teeth or cause cavities. The sucking action can also cause the child to
keep his mouth open in a bad position as a habit, perhaps creating an over-bite if that is how the
child holds the cup in his mouth. Be smart about how you depend on the "sippy cups" - perhaps you
need to alternate with a regular cup and supervision so not to always keep a "sippy cup" available
or full. Watch how your child drinks from it - is it in a position that doesn't look right? Also - fill
it with water rather than sweet drinks, when it has to be refilled often. And don't fill them with
soda - don't get your child started on pop - it's only useless calories - no child needs a soda.
Bad Breath Can Indicate Other Problems 9-26-06
Bad breath may be a side effect of other problems - it could be due to tooth problems, or sinus infection, or
some other problem. If you feel fine in general, try some strong breath mints, drops or gum. Brush and floss
regularly and often. If this doesn't help, or you need to do a breath treatment quite often, you might want to
see a doctor or dentist to find out what may be the problem.

Inhalers to Cost More 9-21-06
Due to regulations, asthma inhalers will cost more - you may already have run into this. The propellants in the older
canisters harm the ozone layer, so they are being phased out. The new design is more expensive, but won't harm the
environment. Until there is more competition between the suppliers, or until someone invents a more practical
design of canister or method of release into the body, inhalers will be more costly. For now, ask your pharmacist
to fill your prescription with the old canisters for the lower cost, if they have any left. You can also try
other pharmacies, such as Sam's Club, which were as of this writing still selling the old canisters for a lower cost.
I know it's a drain on the pocketbook when you just need an inhaler for "just in case" and not for regular use.
Preventive Maintenance 9-19-06
Be sure to do routine checks and screenings as suggested by your physician and other sources. Do a
breast exam every month, and men should check yourselves out as well routinely. Clip nails, paying
attention to fungus or other abnormalities. Clean your ears so not to get wax build-up and eventually
needing to go to a doctor. Brush, floss and rinse (a good mouthwash as recommended by your dentist)
on a daily basis, with brushing and rinsing more often. Go to the dentist every year, twice a year to
get teeth cleaned. Women need a gynecological exam yearly, with mammograms
as recommended when up in age. You should get a physical yearly or at an interval your doctor recommends -
it can find out your cholesterol levels and much more, so you will know what you need to keep an eye on or to correct.
Of course, people with conditions will need to see the doctor more often (if pregnant or having a health
issue, or on medications that need to be monitored, etc.). You should always take care of yourself, in order
to prevent bigger issues and problems that need major medical care.
Bad Time for Pollen & Ragweed 9-12-06
If your allergies are bad when the pollen level is up, or during the ragweed season, try to stay indoors and
keep your windows closed. At night, you can breathe it in so much that you are completely stuffed up in the morning.
The worst times to be out for pollen are in the evenings, when they are more active and before you go to sleep. Ragweed
is usually worse between 10 am and 4 pm. Find your pollen counts in the newspaper, or on your news station, or the
news station website. You can also find pollen counts here.
The Eye Strain Rule, September 8, 2006
With the invention of TVs and computers, and more on screen gadgets, there is more and more eye strain happening. There
is a good rule of thumb called the 20-20-20 rule, to help you or your child or anyone to minimize the
strain on your eyes. Whenever staring at a screen for some time, be it a computer or a TV or something else, look
away every 20 minutes, and focus on something at least 20 feet away from you, for a period of at least 20 seconds. Then
you can go back to what you were watching and remember to repeat this every 20 minutes. Also, another rule of
thumb is to watch from a distance of 5 times of the size of the screen - a 15 inch screen should be viewed from
at least 75 inches away. You should also minimize overhead light glare on the screen. Use some other backdrop lighting
or get an anti-glare coating on your screens.

Need a Flu Shot? September 6, 2006
Certain people are more at risk than others. Older people in senior years should get the flu shot - the flu
can stress the body out and older people may not be able to fight it, or have the energy to come back from it. Young
children - you should check with your pediatrician - it's not necessarily recommended for everyone, but there may
be a case for certain children.
People with certain health risks and problems (especially respiratory)
should ask their doctors whether they should get the flu shot. Most
people with health concerns should get the flu shot. If you have asthma, you should get a flu shot. It often is
the case that people who have asthma, or used to have asthma when younger, can get a worse case of asthma after
getting the flu. Minimize your risks.
Call to make sure there is enough serum at your physician's office or wherever you plan to get your shot at.
Sometimes the serum runs out, so plan to get your shot early in the season. If you get allergy injections or need another
type of shot, you should wait 24 hours (at least) between shots - don't get a flu shot on the same day as
another shot.
Even if you get a shot, that is not a guarantee that you will not get the flu. It is a safe bet that
if you do get the flu, it will be a milder case than without the shot.

Getting a Cold? August 29, 2006
If you are starting to get a cold, start drinking lots of water and warm tea - soothe your throat and flush out
your system. Keep the fluids going down. If it is a cold virus, there isn't much a doctor can do - it has to run its course. You
can treat the symptoms, however, so take care of what feels bad. Cool yourself when having a fever - and take
Tylenol or ibuprofen.

Check Your Nails, August 27, 2006
If your finger or toenails are discolored (yellow or some other color), or the nail is separating from the
skin, or the nail is extra thick - you should have a doctor or dermatologist check you out. There may be a
fungus growing in the nail, or some other problem. You might be able to get an over the counter remedy, or perhaps
you will need a stronger medication.
Check Your Insurance, August 23, 2006
Check your insurance requirements before going to an appointment, especially with a specialist. You need
to be sure your procedure is ok'd before you go to an appointment. Sometimes you need a valid referral from
your doctor in order to get your insurance to pay. Some procedures are only allowed every other year, instead of every
year (perhaps a physical). Sometimes it's just a matter of coding the appointment correctly by the doctor's office.
Sometimes you can get a back referral if you talk to the insurance company or doctor's office, if you neglected to
get one prior to the appointment. Dental procedures may be paid in part or in full depending on what it is - sealant
may not be covered, or cavity fillings that are tooth colored may not be covered, or may be partially covered. Find out,
prior to your appointments, exactly what you need in order to comply with insurance requirements. Talk to your
insurance and your doctor to make sure all is in order.

Going in for a Blood Test? August 21, 2006
When you go to the doctor to get a blood test, or if you are having a physical, or are giving blood, drink lots of water
prior to going - drink lots the night before and all day long until you go. It will increase the size of
your veins, which will make it easier for the nurse to find the vein and poke it. This will save you grief if
they have to look for a vein and miss it because they can't find it. Sometimes you can get poked all over an
area before they find the vein, and it will take longer to fill the tubes. Make sure to drink plenty before
getting you blood drawn.
Itchy Bug Bites, August 19, 2006
If you get a bug bite that is itchy and slightly swollen, with no other symptoms, it's probably a mosquito bite or
something similar. It will itch and drive you crazy - find any sort of anti-itching lotion or cream available -
and treat as instructed. Whatever you do, don't scratch it directly - you'll make it worse and it will last longer. If you
must, scratch lightly (not to break the skin) in the area around the bite, not on the bite. If you have other symptoms,
like large swelling, or pain, or unable to move - call a doctor. It might be a spider bite or something else. If you are
swollen enough in the area, you might see a bite mark enlarged. If you see any spider or bug in the area, try to catch
it to identify it - take it to the doctor in a jar. You might have an allergy to some bug that you never knew about.

Laptop Health, August 9, 2006
If you use a laptop, you may feel uncomfortable with its heat, or with its position that you must use it
in. Do you experience, neck strain, wrist or arm pain, back strain? Is the heat unbearable? If so, you need
to position your laptop so that the keyboard is at about elbow level, with the screen basically in front of your
eyes. No bending forward or down to look at the screen. No raising or lowering of your arms and wrist to
type. Keep it positioned optimally so ouy have less problems. You can help prevent carpal tunnel syndrome by having the
typing area in proper placement. Take care of your self when using a laptop.
Use a LapGenie to properly adjust your laptop
position.
Breast Pain? August 8, 2006
If you have pain in your breasts, don't start off by panicking about it. Most serious problems (like cancer) with the
breast aren't associated with much, if any, pain - but it can be an indication that you need to watch things and perhaps change
habits. The pain may be caused by fibroids or some other hopefully harmless problem.
Do get it checked out by a doctor, especially if you detect any sort of lump - always see a doctor
if you have a lump. Check for lumps monthly and you'll know when something doesn't feel quite right. Breast
pain can be caused by stress, or by ingesting too much caffeine, or some other less problematic cause. If you
drink a lot of coffee or other caffeinated drinks, wean off and see if it makes a difference.
Relaxation Tips - Get Rid of Stress.
Choose Your Shoes Well, August 6, 2006
Choose shoes that are comfortable, and perhaps have good cushion
(like Nike Air, for example)
. It will
help with impact on the back, and much more. Don't wear high heels regularly, and stay away from the
very high ones (and the spiked heels). High heels tend to allow your muscles to shorten, because you
do not exercise them. Then wearing flat shoes can be painful. Wear flat shoes often, and high heels
only occasionally. Take off your shoes at work, under your desk, and relax them in a flat position so
you can keep the muscles at your ankle from stretching properly.

Stretch Your Back, August 4, 2006
We are so hard on our backs - most of us have some amount of back pain, either regularly or
on and off. Keep your back stretched all day long to help. Make sure to stretch it before
activity (or non-activity, like ironing or sitting at a desk or bending over a sink or counter, etc.),
and after activity, and during the activity. A simple stretch that is most effective and can be done
anytime, anywhere: just arch your back, backward, neck too. Bring it back to prove position, and then arch
back again - slowly. You may feel your back "crack" - but this can relieve pain, and is good to do if
you have pain. Find other back stretches, like the "mad cat" for doing in private settings. The arching
can be done while sitting and while standing.

Set Up Your Office and Life With Ergonomics in Mind, August 1, 2006
For proper body position, use good posture and work with proper ergonomic settings. You can alleviate strain on your
neck, back, wrist, arms, and much more. Keep your work in position so you need not lower your head to read or
write. Keep your arms pretty much 90 degrees straight out for writing or typing. Keep a good, straight back position
when sitting. Find a lumbar support to put on your lower back, when sitting. Raise the seat level in your car so
the dip at the back of the chair can be lifted - the recline at the back of the seat is not good for the back. A
knee chair might be a good option for you, if you have a bad back. There are many other ergonomic solutions for
helping you out. See Proper Ergonomics for more
information.
Take Care of Your Teeth, July 29, 2006
Make sure to brush and floss your teeth daily, at least once, preferably more times a day. See your
dentist regularly. Swish your mouth out with water after eating or drinking when you cannot brush.
Taking care of your teeth is crucial - cavities left unattended could allow what's in your mouth to
seep into the bloodstream. You might have problems with the heart, or with "arthritis" or some
other symptoms. You might be able to reverse some problems once you fix your teeth.
Find out more about care of teeth here.
Refrigerate Foods Left Out, July 17, 2006
When serving foods, especially in summer picnics, be sure to keep the foods cool that need to be.
If the meat isn't served fast enough to stay hot, or you can't keep it warm on a BBQ, store it in the
refrigerator or in a cooler so it won't spoil. Keep mayonnaise and mayonnaise-based salads in
the cooler at all times - don't even leave it out. Keep it on ice while serving because mayonnaise can
go bad and make people ill if not properly chilled. Use common sense, and don't be tempted to eat
food that is left in the sun - serve yourself up early and eat enough so you don't have to eat the
cooled meat or warmed up salads. Don't get yourself sick.
Wash Your Hands, July 11, 2006
Whenever you are around dirt or germs, wash your hands. Wash after going to the bathroom, but use your
wiping towel to open the door (the door handle has an incredible amount of germs on it) and throw the towel
away afterwards. Wash after coughing or sneezing - or after handling something someone has sneezed on. Wash
after handling pets. Wash after handling raw meat. Wash before preparing meals. Wash your hands often - you
need not get compulsive over it, but keep them clean. The number of times I could have avoided getting sick
if I had washed after pushing a grocery cart - I can't even count anymore. You can avoid a lot of germs
if you wash your hands often enough.
Aspirin, July 8, 2006
Aspirin should not be used on children - they can get Reyes syndrome and it can be fatal, or do damage to
your child. If you have nasal polyps, consult your doctor to see if aspirin is safe for you. There
are other instances of when not to take aspirin - always check with your doctor before using it -
it might not be as safe as you think.
Safe Deodorant, July 6, 2006
Deodorant should hide odor - not necessarily keep you from perspiring. You need to
let your body cool off by sweating. Aluminum in deodorants prevents perspiration, but
it can also be harmful - aluminum is linked to Alzheimer's disease - try to use deodorants
without aluminum. Safe deodorant without aluminum can be found
here.
Nail Polish Concerns, May 30, 2006
When you are pregnant, avoid putting nail polish on your fingernails. The ingredients can seep through
your bloodstream and into the baby. Which should tell you that perhaps you should look for a safe
nail polish at all times, because if it can get into your bloodstream, it can be bad for you as well, even
if pregnancy isn't a concern. A nice line of basically safe and non harmful nail enamel and other
cosmetics is here.
Avoid Aluminum, May 19, 2006
Look at the products you use, and try to get rid of the aluminum. Aluminum is linked to dementia - it is not a
healthy product to ingest or absorb in the skin. Don't cook in cheap aluminum pots and pans - there may be new
types that may be safe - check them out before you buy. Don't use deodorants with aluminum in them - and yes,
it's hard to find one without. You can occasionally use aluminum foil, but don't make a habit of it.

Calm Down, May 16, 2006
Whatever situation you are in, whether feeling sick, breaking something, getting into an accident,
frustration with someone or some event, etc., try to keep a calm mind, and think about it rationally.
Don't just react and make things worse. Your child need not see you blow up and say things or throw things
that are not necessary. You need not go into panic if you are throwing up - you can choke on it, and make
things worse - just deal with it calmly and don't get excited - it's a natural thing. If you break something,
figure out a solution - how to replace or fix it - not panic. Panic won't fix much of anything. Breathe deep
and think about the situation. Stay calm.

Take Care of Your Feet, May 9, 2006
Take good care of your feet - and you'll be happier. Wear clean, dry socks every day (change them and
don't use them over after you've worn them - not healthy, and stinky). Let your feet breathe occasionally by
going barefoot or wearing sandals. Rotate shoes, or spray your shoes with shoe deodorant so you won't make them
worse, and they won't immediately stink up your feet every day. Use lotion on your feet to pamper them - they dry out
easily, but do this at night, not when you put your socks on - you want dry feet in the socks. Wear shoes that are
your size - not to big and not small. If small, you can compress the toenails and turn them toward the toe - making
it painful, not to mention the position your feet must be in that can affect you up to your back or neck.
If you have foot pain, see a doctor. You can have something going on that needs more attention. You might have
corns or warts. You might have ingrown toenail. You might have yellow or overly thick toenails, or a fungus -
you can try in-store treatments for some conditions, but not for all. You can take care of your feet
but some situations might need doctor care - see a doctor if you can't get control of the situation yourself.
Tired? Take a Nap, May 4, 2006
Siestas in Mexico are really not a bad idea - the afternoon is when most people feel drowsy each day with
activities wearing them out. If you notice you get tired at the same time every day, take a short nap, 20-30
minutes, if you are able to. If you are at work, try taking a nap when you get home, or on the bus ride home, and
get your body to adjust the urge to sleep later. When you get older, it's natural to need a bit of a nap or
break later in the day. It will help you go a long way each day, and rejuvenate you. For more information, see
http://www.doubleii/com/sleep.html
Funny Smells? April 28, 2006
If things start to smell funny or bad, and no one else notices, it may be internal to you - perhaps a
sinus infection or some other infection. You should check with your doctor, especially if you have
drainage or yellowish or greenish discharge. You might also think about your diet - you could be giving off
odors from the food you eat - this happens to people who eat a lot of garlic or other strong foods. Lay off
the strong food for a few days and see if the funny smells go away. It could be there is something rotting in your home,
perhaps food that got hidden somewhere, or a dead mouse - your nose may be more sensitive to picking up the
smell. Look for the problem before it causes more problems (like attracting bacteria or maggots). You can
also suspect shoes - sometimes the odor off of shoes or bad smelly feet can linger all through a house, if
bad enough.
Get Enough Sleep, April 12, 2006
Lack of sleep can cause a lot of other problems and ailments - headaches, depression, difficulty in thinking,
anxiety and more. Younger children need more sleep - 10-12 hours (very young even more) - this should be the case
for teens, as well - with school and activities scheduled, it's tough on them to do well unless they
get enough sleep. Adults need a minimum of 8 hours, some need 10. If you fall asleep as soon as your head hits the
pillow - you aren't getting enough sleep. For more information, see
http://www.doubleii/com/sleep.html
Care for your Teeth, April 4, 2006
Did you know that if you neglect your teeth, you may have more problems than you realize -
toxins can seep into your bloodstream through deep cavities, or the effects of a rotted tooth can
lead to problems with your heart, with arthritis, with your sinuses - and more. Take good care of your
teeth and see a dentist at least yearly. For more information, see
http://www.abetterlife.net/dental.html
Relief for your back & neck when using a laptop, and eliminate the heat
Laptops are ergonomically awful - the screen and keyboard aren't in the right places to keep yourself
healthy - you have to lean over to work with it, and then there is the problem of heat - which can and does
cause other health problems. One wonderful invention is the LapGenie
- it is an adjustable desk to set your
laptop into the best position it can be. It folds up for easy travel, and has many other uses. Check it out. It's made a huge difference to
me and a lot of people. Highly recommended!
