Air travel tips:
Think of all you need to pack and prepare for prior to flying - and don't forget your tickets (or credit card you purchased the e-tickets with) and your passport if traveling internationally.
Confirm your flight a day or so earlier than when you leave. You don't want to leave everything until the last minute
in case something needs to be resolved.
Plan to get to the airport several hours prior to your flight. Heightened security will have more
checking of carry-on bags - be sure you do not have anything in your carry-on luggage or on your person
that can cause further delays in your air travel.
Don't take any liquids with you onto the airplane, unless in well-marked 3 ounce or less containers all in ONE one-quart
Ziploc bag -
put the rest or larger quantities in the check-in luggage and make sure it is well sealed. The
only liquids over the 3 ounce amount that may be allowed are baby formula or breast milk if there is a baby with you.
Juice may be allowed for a small child with you - check with the airline. Liquids or gels in your carry-on bag
(this would include shampoo, or conditioner or hair gel, toothpaste (not in a partially used rolled up tube -
have a small travel tube that is intact), lip balm or lipstick, cosmetics, sunscreen, and other creams or gels or liquids).
Insulin and other essential non-prescription medicines are still allowed - in the correct containers,
as well as your prescription medicines - in the original bottles with the prescription label on them.
No knives, or other items that can be used as weapons - use your common sense about this, and
be prepared to toss out items that don't pass the test, rather than argue or try to get them checked.
Make sure your presciption medicine has your name on it, to match the name on the ticket.
Take a minimum 2-4 days' worth of necessary items in your carry-on, in case of your luggage getting lost or delayed. Make
sure to put larger quantities of toiletries in your regular luggage so that you have more when you get to your
destination. For any liquids or gels you pack, either in checked-in luggage or in carry-on, place a layer of plastic (or Seran)
wrap between the cap and the supply - it can leak out and make a huge mess in your suitcase! Place all gels and liquids in
their own ziplock bags so that it will contain any spill if something happens. Believe me, things happen - pressure, squeezing,
heat, cold, etc.!
Be prepared to take out and separate out in the security area: your laptop, camera, your medications, your 3 ounce bag,
and other items of interest or to make the thickness of your carry-on thinner (I had too much stacked up and
they took everything out and sent it through the
x-ray separately). You may have to remove your belt, your shoes, and any coat or sweater.
Leave extra empty space in your luggage to pack souvenirs into, to bring back with you. Take along a backpack or duffel
bag that is empty - to use as needed, and to store your dirty laundry in, to separate it from your clean clothes. You can also,
if needed, use this as an extra check-in piece of luggage in case you need more room for items to bring back - remember there
would be a surcharge for extra check-in baggage over that which is allowed (2 check-in pieces for most airlines is
standard without charge), and at 50 pounds per bag, or a total of 100 pounds per person.
If returning internationally - keep track of all you've bought (plus gifts from others to you) and are bringing back,
plus the approximate values. Do not bring back anything live or fresh - fruits, etc. You'll have to fill out a form on
the flight back listing your information and items, signed by you as being correct. Then when you go through customs,
they'll ask you to clarify any information. Your luggage may be gone through, as well, so make sure you know what
you had in each suitcase, in case anything is missing. Carry all small items in an enclosed small bag in the checked-in luggage,
preferably in a see-through bag so they need not open it to inspect it) or in your carry-on.
